AbouttheGuild

The history of the Zunft (Guild) zur Schmiden in the Middle Ages reads like a gripping novel. Traces of its Constitution in 1336 and its life until the present day can be found at every turn in the Guild House.

It originated in the merger of several professions and crafts: ‘Schmidt’ (iron, copper, silver and goldsmiths), ‘Swertfeger’ (weaponry), ‘Kannengiesser’ (pewterers, making plates and dishes), ‘Gloggner’ (bell founders, casting cow and church bells), Spengeller (tinsmiths) and ‘Sarwürcker’ (makers of chain armour and coats of mail).

The tradition of the Guild Houses in Zurich carries on unchanged.  Not only do these numerous witnesses of their time and age enthral observers with their picturesque appearance, the annual culmination in the custom of ‘Sechseläuten’ (the six o’clock ringing of the bells), a festival lasting three days in April, is also very impressive.
